August 20 Update

Dear KLSD Families,

We are beyond excited to welcome all our students back for in-person learning, five days a week, starting on September 9. Two years ago, that would have seemed like a mundane goal. Today, we appreciate more than ever the value and the need for students to be together and with their teachers in school, as consistently as possible.

Here is the presentation we provided our Board of Education last night. I encourage you to look through the slides to learn more detail than I can provide in the short summary below. You will also find a link to a survey in which we’re asking for your feedback and questions by Monday, August 23.

To create the greatest likelihood of maintaining in-person learning and many other valued in-person experiences (sports, music, theater, clubs, etc.) as consistently and safely as possible, the following are some of the strategies we are recommending:

- Remote learning will not be an option this year, unless we are forced to close our schools to all students (exceptions may be made for medically fragile students).

- Masks will be required indoors and optional outdoors. If worn consistently by all, we expect that quarantining will drop significantly from last year.

- Screening testing will be provided on a weekly basis. We will ask for consent from families.

- COVID vaccination information will be requested on a voluntary basis.

- Social distancing will be consistent with CDC and NYSED recommendations.

For much more detail, please see the attached slides. Our individual schools will provide school-specific details soon.

My thanks to Westchester County Department of Health for their ongoing support and for the testing program they are making available to all schools in our region.

It will again take a collective community effort, focused on the safety and well-being of our students, families, and staff, to help us keep our schools open and in-person. My thanks, as always, for your partnership in this effort.

Sincerely,

Andrew Selesnick, Superintendent of Schools
