Tri-State Regionals Winner

7th grader Redmond Margie wins Regional Geography Contest

Congrats to seventh grader Redmond Margie who won the Tri-State Regionals of the International Geography Bee! This was his second time at the event; last year he placed third in his grade after winning John Jay Middle School Geography Bee. He and other winners from around the country have the opportunity to proceed to the National Championships in June.

“That is AWESOME news!!!” said John Jay social studies teacher Kelsey Madonna who organized the preliminary school-level competition.

The regionals were held at Hackley School in Tarrytown on Sunday, May 21. Other members of John Jay's team were Marcus Hermanto, Benny Loscalzo, Kalyan Ganesan, and Nico Vigil.

The day included more than competition.

A highlight of the event was the talk from anthropologist David Harrison, a professor of linguistics at Swarthmore College and a National Geographic Fellow who documents endangered languages and cultures around the world.

“He was awesome and inspirational,” said Redmond’s mother Mariya Rosberg.
