K-L Community’s Excitement for Capital Improvements Project

School Principals Look to New Student Opportunities

In three years’ time, the favorite part of the day for some Katonah-Lewisboro elementary students may be letting their imaginations soar in their school’s new makerspaces; John Jay Middle School students might be engaging with nature throughout the year in the school’s new greenhouse; and John Jay High School’s students may step towards their futures in state-of-the-art science labs, a new performance space and learning spaces designated for collaboration and innovation.

Supporting student learning is the driving force behind Katonah-Lewisboro Schools’ Capital Improvement Proposal, which goes to community vote on October 18, 2022.

“This is an exciting time for our school district,” said Katonah-Lewisboro Board of Education President Marjorie Schiff. “We will see some amazing transformation of spaces. We have a lot to be proud of and be excited about.”

"21st Century facility" - John Jay High School Principal Siciliano

“The Capital Improvement Project will catapult John Jay High School into a 21st century facility,” said Principal Steven Siciliano, referring to the proposed redesign of the C wing science classrooms, the renovation of the auditorium and the school’s two step labs, and the conversion of traditional classrooms in B wing into modern, flexible, collaborative learning spaces.

“From carefully designed learning spaces to great safety and environmentally sustainable upgrades, this thoughtful project delivers students an enhanced educational experience that meets challenges of the future and creates a high school facility to which our community will be proud to send its students.”

"Work towards sustainability goals" - John Jay Middle School Principal Swiatowicz

The middle school will see equally transformative investments. “We are very excited for the upgrades and updates planned for the middle school,” said John Jay Middle School Principal Jeff Swiatowicz.

“A greenhouse will allow John Jay Middle School to do even more work toward our sustainability goals,” he added. “The auditorium upgrade will impact all our students and families through our school-wide events. Our electrical and audio systems are decades old, and their upgrade is necessary for the regular, seamless operation of our events.”

Elementary School Principals Anticipate Upgrades

"The much-needed replacement of modular classrooms will provide our students with a better learning environment,” said Increase Miller Elementary School Principal Kerry Ford. “It will support research-based instructional approaches, student engagement and flexibility for both staff and students."

“From upgrading the old computer lab into a modern maker space to replacing the boiler with geothermal energy, we look forward to modernizing this old, beautiful building and providing new learning opportunities for all students,” said Katonah Elementary School Principal Cristy Harris.

"We are excited for this possibility," said  Meadow Pond Elementary School Principal Ashlyn Field. "Our students will benefit from an updated library and STREAM space."
