Important COVID Reporting Update

January 3, 2022

Dear KLSD Community,

Happy New Year, and a quick update.

If/when you have a COVID case to report, we are now returning to our pre-winter break reporting practice. Please notify your school principal and/or school nurse immediately upon learning that a student is COVID positive. The reporting form we were using over break is no longer active.

Be assured that our goal is to keep our schools open and prioritize in-person learning for as long as possible. Both the shutdown of spring 2020 and the hybrid experience of 20-21 made it clear just how important it is for children to be in school with the full attention of their teachers.

Our most immediate obstacle is staffing. Staffing was tight today and it may get tighter in the days ahead. We know of individual schools in neighboring districts that have already closed due to staffing shortages. We will do all we can to avoid closing but must be ready for the possibility. In the meantime, we are reallocating staff as necessary, and we thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through newly challenging circumstances.

I wish you and your family good health in the New Year.

Yours,

Andrew Selesnick, Superintendent of Schools
