Art Club Creates!
There’s focused excitement in the JJMS art studio. Over a dozen members of the after-school Art Club are creating paintings that will be hung in the school’s hallways. It’s a compelling prospect and everyone wants theirs to be as good as it can be.
One group of students is painting "Think like a proton - be positive!" in an iridescent shimmer. At the next table, another group is painting "Every failure makes you stronger" in bright red. Other effects include a Zentangle, letter art, and splatter painting. Amid it all, Jean Capuano, the art teacher, moves from group to group offering constructive feedback and technical help.
“The Art Club’s mission is to make our building more beautiful,” said Capuano. The club wasn't her idea. This past fall, two students asked her if she could lead an art club. She agreed and more than thirty students signed up! The Art Club meets once a month.
“I like creating,” said one student. “It calms me.”
