Welcome to DIBELS

DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) is a universal reading screener for students in grades K–8. DIBELS is a research-based assessment that provides teachers with timely information about students’ foundational reading skills. By identifying strengths and areas for growth early, it helps ensure that every child receives the support they need to become a confident, capable reader.

Key points:

• Aligned with the Science of Reading: DIBELS focuses on essential early literacy skills, including phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, and comprehension.

• Supports personalized instruction: Teachers use DIBELS results to guide instruction and address each student’s unique learning needs.

• Tracks growth over time: Students are assessed multiple times throughout the year, allowing teachers to monitor progress and adjust instruction accordingly.

• Nationally normed benchmarks: DIBELS results are compared to students nationwide, helping us understand each child’s performance in a broader context.

• Part of a comprehensive approach: Along with classroom and state assessments, DIBELS helps build a complete picture of student learning and growth.

While we look forward to sharing results with families in the future, parent reports will not be sent home this school year. We are currently in a learning phase, exploring these assessments and their implications for teaching and learning. As we deepen our understanding and put systems in place to respond more effectively to student needs, we will begin sending reports home.

Our goal is to ensure every student develops strong, confident reading skills and a lifelong love of learning.
