Parents began bouncing babies on their knees and siblings started swinging their feet … it was hard not to, when a third-grade recorder ensemble at Increase Miller Elementary began playing “Jingle Bells.” No matter it was June, the third-grade recorder ensembles had started learning the instrument in January, when there was still a chance of snow!
Third grade recorder concerts took place across the District this month. Families were invited to performances full of familiar favorites that showcased the musical growth of their students.
Increase Miller Elementary concerts were class by class, conducted by music teachers April Higgins and Luis Vazquez. At Katonah Elementary, conducted by Vazquez, and Meadow Pond Elementary, conducted by music teachers Melissa Richardson and Faith Willett, the concerts were larger, all-grade ensembles.
Regardless of the size of the group, skills including breath control, finger coordination, and reading music are folded into the experience. “Learning the recorder allows the students to experience the joy of making music early on,” said Higgins.
It prepares them for the next step.
After Increase Miller third graders performed “Lightly Row,” music teacher Vazquez highlighted that many of the third graders chose to perform that song for their orchestra or band audition—an opportunity that opens for students when they reach fourth grade.
Surprises made the concerts more fun for everyone.
While Mr. Vazquez accompanied the students on piano for most songs, some were played in two parts, and others unaccompanied. The class saved their favorite piece for last.
Even the first few notes set the audience's feet tapping. A recorded track started the beat; the recorders carried the melody. “Eye of the Tiger” became even more fun when, on cue from Mr. Vazquez, the students lowered their recorders and sang one of the verses!
“Great job,” Mr. Vazquez said to the students at the end of the concert. “I am so proud of you!”
