School Closing Extended to April 29, 2020

April 6, 2020

Dear KLSD Community,

Today, Governor Cuomo extended the period of school closings until at least April 29th. Distance learning will continue and as I’ve indicated previously, our students can expect to see some changes in the structure and delivery of that distance learning.

In addition, tomorrow the Board of Regents will announce that this year’s Regents Exams will be cancelled. We expect to receive more guidance in the coming days on what this means for course credits, Regents diplomas, etc. As soon as we know more, we will share that information with you.

Finally, I must raise again the topic of groups gathering to play games on our fields. This past weekend, a Lewisboro police officer had to break up games on a field at our John Jay campus. The games resumed shortly after the officer left. I spoke today with the Town Supervisors of both Lewisboro and Bedford. Moving forward, police in both towns will treat school property as public property. Anyone participating in group games, in violation of the Governor’s emergency orders, should expect to have a more serious interaction with the police. Governor Cuomo has raised the fine for violating social distancing rules to $1000.

I hope that we can continue allowing individual access to our facilities for appropriate, socially responsible exercise. But the health and well-being of all must and will be the determining factor. As the weather improves, I know that many of our students are eager to be together to play the games they love. Please join me in telling them to make a small sacrifice now for the much greater good. Thank you.

Be safe and be well.

Andrew Selesnick, Superintendent of Schools
