Incident at John Jay High School

January 12, 2023

Dear KLSD Community,

This afternoon, Dr. Siciliano, our JJHS Principal, sent a notice to the JJHS community informing them that a swastika was found in school earlier today. I am attaching his letter here, so that our entire community can be aware of what occurred and how it is being addressed.

I thank Dr. Siciliano for responding so swiftly and with such resolve. I thank the JJHS community for approaching this matter with the seriousness it deserves. We stand united in our condemnation of antisemitism and all acts of hatred, and yet they continue to occur. Sadly, this is true in our community, in surrounding communities, across the nation, and around the world.

We will continue forward in our mission of creating an educational community that inspires compassion and understanding, that instills respect for the dignity of every individual, and that requires individual responsibility in this collective effort. Each step backwards motivates us to work harder to move forward, fully aware that there are no simple or certain solutions.

Thank you for joining with us by having conversation at home, as we will in school, about the essential need for compassion, understanding, and respect for all.

Sincerely,

Andrew Selesnick, Superintendent of Schools
