Equity and Racial Justice Committee Invitation - January 2022

January 14, 2022

Dear KLSD Community,

As we enter the long weekend on which we commemorate the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we remind ourselves of our ongoing commitment to racial justice, equity, and inclusion in our schools. Without doubt, COVID has taxed our resources and challenged our ability to make the kind of progress to which we are committed. I hope this letter will serve both as a reminder of and an invitation to partner with us in this important work.

Last year, we formed a District-wide Equity and Racial Justice Committee (ERJC). The group met monthly and consisted of middle and high school students, staff, parents, alumni, community members, and Board of Education members. We spent the year learning together and, toward the end of the year, made recommendations to our Board of Education in the areas of policy, professional learning, hiring and retention, curriculum, leadership development, and student equity leadership.  ERJC is continuing its work this year and will help the district to create the necessary conditions to move this work forward.

To that end, we now would like to expand the committee to include new members from all stakeholder groups who are committed to creating more welcoming and affirming environments in our schools.  If you were not a member of ERJC last year and would like to be considered for this year, please fill out this brief application by Thursday, January 20th.  If you are a current member who is unable to return this year, please notify Ms. Mary Anne Carroll (mcarroll@klschools.org) as soon as possible.  The dates of our meetings, which will begin as virtual and may switch to in-person later in the year, are:

  • January 26
  • February 23
  • March 30
  • May 4
  • June 1

Please note that all meetings are scheduled to take place from 4:00 to 6:00 on Wednesday afternoons.

Thank you for your interest and your willingness to partner with us.

Sincerely,

Andrew Selesnick, Superintendent of Schools
