Elementary Enrollment Update December 2021

December 10, 2021

Dear KLSD Elementary School Families,

At last night’s Board of Education meeting, I provided an update to our Board on current enrollment patterns among our three elementary schools. As the following chart shows, enrollment trends have created marked differences in size among the three schools.

The significantly larger enrollment at Increase Miller Elementary School is already impacting our ability to manage and schedule educational and enrichment programs at IMES. Next year’s projected numbers and the corresponding number of classroom sections will only make the situation more challenging. This year, with 24 sections at IMES, every classroom is occupied.

Next week, we will reach out to IMES families to invite interested stakeholders to begin conversation around possible next steps. Among the topics for consideration are:

  • New housing development under construction on Route 22 (Currently in the IMES zone)
  • Alternative space options at IMES
  • Class size tolerance at IMES
  • Tolerance for variation in programming at IMES vs. KES & MPES
  • Re-zoning
  • Others?

A complex conversation such as this must include stakeholder voices from the outset and throughout. I will continue to keep you apprised as we move forward.

Have a good weekend. Be well,

Andrew Selesnick, Superintendent of Schools
