Time to read each day

Listening to books being read aloud ... reading books independently ... talking about books together ... writing reflections to books ... the pleasures of reading are brought into Katonah-Lewisboro elementary classrooms each day.

Readers and writers enjoy teachers reading aloud to them

Students receive opportunities to talk and write in response to texts

Kimberly Buckley began the year by reading “This School Year Will Be the BEST!”  with her second graders. Because it was a perfect September day, the class enjoyed the book outdoors.

The picture book was a fruitful springboard for class brainstorming. After listening to the story about another class’s hopes for the coming year, Buckley’s students’ easily shared their wishes, too: to read chapter books, to become a better scientist, to make new friends, to have fun and to enjoy recess with the whole class together.

After taking turns listening to each other, Buckley and her students headed inside to write their class’s goals together.
