Fire Prevention Week

Katonah Elementary School’s students looked up in awe at Firefighter Mike Roper walking up the aerial of Katonah Fire Department’s Ladder 39 ... all of the way to the roof of the school! It was part of a Fire Prevention Week visit that included discussion of what to do if a student smelled smoke—get low and go—as well as an up-close look at firefighting gear and equipment.

The seriousness of the subject was made more accessible because it was delivered by familiar caring faces—alumni of KES, and parents of former and current KES students. The visit ended in a homework assignment for the students: Talk to your family about the importance of having smoke alarms at home. Know your family’s evacuation meeting place.

Thank you, Firefighter Catherine Long, Firefighter Mike Roper, Lieutenant Laurie DeRosa and Rescue Company Captain Scott Whalen.
