Reading Marathon

Kindergarteners in Kate Hernandez’s class participated in a Reading Marathon after completing The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project unit "Bigger Books, Bigger Reading Muscles.”

Meet the marathoners

The students trained for a few weeks by reading over 50 books independently, as a class and with guest readers including parents, staff and older students.

Michelle DeMarco, Meadow Pond’s Reading Interventionist who ran the Boston Marathon this year, visited and shared with the class the importance of training to build stamina and strength. She read "Her Fearless Run: Kathrine Switzer’s Historic Boston Marathon" by Kim Chaffee, to the students.

The kindergarteners were able to read for 26 minutes—just like the 26 miles runners run in a marathon. “The kids had a great time, and we are proud of their accomplishments as readers this year,” said Hernandez.

The trained hard and met the goal!
