Escape Room ... Math style

The key is in converting customary units

Fourth graders in Jason Briggs and Melissa DiMarco’s class were super surprised when their teachers closed the classroom doors, put blue tape over them and told their class they were “locked” in an Escape Room.

A message appeared on the smart board:

A Mad Mathematician trapped your whole class in the classroom. To escape, you must use your skills with customary conversions to convince him to let you go … You must hurry and escape before you remain trapped in math class forever!

The students couldn't wait to get to work!

This is what Math motivation looks like!

The KLSD Learning Commitment in action

Students worked in triads to solve conversion puzzles. They applied their math knowledge about equivalent units of measure with gusto, answering questions and entering their answers into an online portal. The completion code added to the fun—it wasn’t just the end of the game; it activated an additional recess!

“It has been wonderful to see students excited, engaged and smiling as they participate in a variety of different math activities,” said Amy Signore, Meadow Pond Elementary School Interventionist and Math Curriculum Leader Grades 3-5.
