Using Microscopes--An Eye-Opening Experience!

Taking your first glimpses of single celled organisms is an awesome experience. That’s what’s happening in seventh grade science! There’s a feeling of intensity and discovery in the classroom as Suzanne Guziec’s students work in pairs to set up and use compound microscopes.

After viewing slides of various unicellular organisms--radiolaria, amoeba, stentor, protista and stentor-- the teams respond to prompts which develop their facility with magnification and scale.

Guziec explains that the students designed an experiment to test if all living things are made of cells. They are motivated to understand how to use the microscope in order to observe cells and complete the investigation they designed.

"This is just the start of this year's hands-on experiments and scientific inquiry," said Guziec.
