National Merit Semi-Finalists
John Jay High School is extremely pleased and proud to announce that Jessica Leff and Johanna Schechter are National Merit Scholar Semifinalists for 2019.
"Their accomplishments are a testament to the high personal standards they have set for themselves and the commitment and perseverance necessary to achieve this level of distinction," said Dr. Steven Siciliano, principal of John Jay High School. "We also congratulate their families and their teachers as all student-success is nurtured through these critical relationships. We wish both Jessica and Johanna continued success and happiness in their studies."
The National Merit Scholarship Coorperation shares that over 1.6 million juniors in about 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest- scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and in February they will be notified of this designation.
